DePuy Hip Vision or Hearing Loss

Based on the results of a study conducted in 2009 in the United Kingdom, patients who received a DePuy ASR XL Hip Implant may be at risk of suffering vision or hearing loss from metallosis, or metallic poisoning.

According to researchers who tested 660 patients who had received the implant, the metal shavings generated by the DePuy ASR Hip Implant can lead to absorption of harmful metal ions into the bloodstream.  Metallic poisoning is one of the most dangerous side effects of the recalled DePuy Hip Implant.

The metal-on-metal ball and socket design of the DePuy Hip was intended to make the implant more durable for active patients.  Unfortunately, this design has the tendency to release metal shavings into the body which can cause serious side effects. Among them are allergic reactions, bone loss, soft tissue damage, vision or hearing problems or even tumors and cancer.

The National Institute of Health has released studies linking the metal in defective DePuy Hip implants to severe tissue inflammation and poisoning.  Metallic poisoning has been shown to cause the breakdown of bone marrow and white blood cells.

Experts have even related the effects of metal poisoning to cancer or birth defects if the toxic metals enter the reproductive organs near the pelvic region. Then, the 2009 United Kingdom study linked metallic poisoning to problems such as vision loss, soft tissue and muscle damage, and hearing loss.

If you received a DePuy Hip Implant, it is important to see your doctor for symptoms of implant failure and undergo testing for toxic metals in your bloodstream.  Contact us today to speak with a DePuy Hip Attorney about your legal rights.

Since the harmful effects of metallic poisoning may take years to surface, it is important to monitor for symptoms such as DePuy Hip vision or hearing loss and undergo testing even if you have not experienced any adverse symptoms.  Experts estimate at least 13% of patients will require surgery to remove their implant due to side effects like metallic poisoning.

Legal Options

The decision to recall the DePuy Hip Implant came after increasing reports to the FDA of patients suffering adverse symptoms like those caused by metallic poisoning. Records indicate DePuy knew about the risks of the implant after it was released, but continued to market the product for years before warning consumers or ordering a recall.

DePuy has indicated it will pay “reasonable and customary costs of monitoring and treatment” for the defective hip implants.  This may include surgical costs to replace the device, however, it does not compensate patients for pain and suffering, lost time or wages or the long term effects of metallic poisoning like DePuy Implant vision or hearing loss.

Lawyers are currently filing DePuy Hip Implant Lawsuits for the harmful side effects of this device. We are available 24 hours a day to answer your questions and provide a confidential evaluation of your case.
